Joint Preservation Innovations — R&D Capital Deployment

Mapping every commercial path available to the company's IP — then sequencing $2M of capital behind the one that would create value fastest.

The Mandate

JPI's articulating rotary cutting technology had application across a wide range of surgical procedures — and a finite capital base with which to pursue them. Every path was clinically credible. What the founders lacked was an evidence-based basis for choosing among them, and the sequencing discipline to fund one to completion rather than several partway.

The Market Study

We conducted a comprehensive market study of the addressable opportunity by joint type and by region, sizing procedure volumes and reimbursement dynamics across each. Every possible R&D path for the underlying IP was then scored on a three-axis matrix: valuation impact, investment required, and time to fruition. The exercise converted an open-ended set of clinical possibilities into a ranked, comparable capital allocation decision.

Sequencing the Capital Outlay

The matrix identified the arthroscopic application — the Articulator™ Arthroscopic Bur — as the shortest path to a clearable, commercially viable product at the lowest investment. We streamlined the company's investment channels behind it and temporarily narrowed the scope of adjacent R&D programs, holding them in sequence rather than in parallel. Each tranche of the $2M was released against a defined regulatory milestone, converting capital into verifiable progress rather than diffuse development spend.

The Outcome

The prioritized program reached FDA 510(k) clearance in December 2025 and won the 2026 AANA Lightbulb Award — a step-change in enterprise value delivered on the original $2M, with no incremental capital required. The deferred programs were not abandoned but sequenced: each now advances from a materially stronger position, with a cleared predicate device and an established regulatory track record behind it.
